For a long time, Pittsburgh's economy was driven by the steel industry. In the 1980s however, an industry wide collapse occured, and Pittsburgh was forced to seek a new base for its economic needs. Currently, Pittsburgh is a forerunner in healthcare, education, technology, financial services and robotics, in particular, is a major sector of the local economy.
High technology, health care, nuclear engineering, tourism, biomedical technology, finance and services are the primary industries in Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh is home to seven Fortune 500 companies (see below), which puts Pittsburgh in a tie for sixth-most Fortune 500 headquarters in the nation. In 2006, Pittsburgh was ranked by Expansion Magazine among the top 10 metropolitan areas in the nation for climates favorable to business expansion.
